Markus could feel a storm gathering about an hour before it hit. He didn’t say anything because he a Joliette had never spoken more then a sentence to each other, why start now. She was the recently ex-girlfriend of his not-so-best friend Jack. The three of them had gone up to Markus’s family’s cabin for a weekend of escape from the city.
Everything was fine the first night, Markus cooked, and they snuggled by the fire. They all played some card games and turned in early. Things took a turn late on the second day, Jack had taken the truck into town for supplies and came back at four in the morning smelling of crap whisky, truck smashed on the passenger side. After a tense couple of hours exchanging friendly but awkward smiles, not-reading books and old magazines they had decided that Jack must have gotten lost in the dark. No big deal Markus and Jack had taken plenty of road trips and just slept in the car. Markus reassured her of this and they went to bed expecting a good story in the morning. Neither of them was asleep and could hear the truck coming up the muddy road. Relived Markus tossed on a pair of boots and went out to check on his friend. As the truck came near he could see one of the front lights was out, and the grill was gone. Markus had a bad feeling about the whole situation and backed away from the approaching truck. He grabbed Joliette’s shoulders and steered her hurriedly back into the cabin fighting her protest. Markus bolted the door and reached the gun down from the mantle, giving Joliette’s confused and worried look a deeper crease. The truck door slammed, and they could hear Jack shouting a Springsteen song into the darkness. Markus tightened his grip on the gun and looked worryingly at Joliette, neither of them knew much about Jack’s past. He was now banging on the door with a hail of curse words calling Joliette a slew of names that had her shaking with tears. The windows were all had wooden shutters in the inside to seal the cabin for winters, but they could hear him breaking windows from the outside. His tirade went on for an hour, Markus and Joliette huddled behind the couch strangers united in fear. Markus finally heard the soft thud of Jack passing out, Joliette clutched at him as he rose to check out the slit in the shutters. He was out cold, Markus waived a frantic hand at Joliette to follow him out of the cabin. He grabbed a blanket and the emergency kit he kept in the trunk and the two of them slunk off into the night. As quick as they could, they set off for the pass to town.
When the first snow flake drifted lazily down from the sky Joliette finally broke the silence.
“Are you a psychotic bastard too?”
“Nope, just the regular kind.”
“Your going to joke, after that lunatic tried to kill us and trapped us in the mountains?”
“Look we’re here so lets—lets just go back to not talking.”
“Do you have a cell phone?”
“No, no signal anyway”
“You do know where we’re going right? I mean you can survive off the land and all that?”
“You see that gap in the mountains there, just over it is a ranger station it’s no more than a day or two hike.”
“A day or two, what kind of people are you.”
“Don’t lump me in with that nut job.”
“You were his best friend right? So your probably just as messed up, look just lets not talk.”
“We met in collage, I’ve only known him a few years. He never talked about his past.”
“We’re not talking.”
“Fine, but we’d better pick up the pace before this storm comes in.”
“What storm? Oh this is just wonderful, one day you’re sipping lattés worrying about the cleaner ruing your sweater, and the next you’re trying to out-run a snowstorm in the mountains while being chased by a lunatic, HA!”
“At least there are no mosquitoes this time of year.”
“More jokes, that’s what you’re going to offer more Jokes!”
“Sorry.”
“How many people are looking for us? I mean will the rangers?”
“My guess is just one, and I don’t think we want him to find us.”
“Another Joke, really?”
“No Joke nobody expects us back for a couple of days, and its not like he’s going to tell…Shshh”
“What why are you shushing me?”
“Shut up, did you hear that?”
“What ?”
“That was a gun shot, we gotta hide.”
Ok and I freaked my self out writing this.
